Sir Ernest Shackleton, who died on this day in 1922, was one of the great Antarctic explorers. The British explorer set out on four expeditions to the South Pole and was knighted for his accomplishments.

In 1907, Shackleton joined the Nimrod Expedition to Antarctica, where he spent almost two years exploring and mapping the frozen continent. He made an unsuccessful attempt to reach the South Pole but came within a hundred miles of it.

  • – The Endurance was built in Norway, at the Framnaes Mekaniske Verksted yard, in Sandefjord.
  • – The Endurance left Plymouth, England on December 5th, 1914, and reached South Georgia Island on January 9th, 1915. After having her ship’s boat repaired and making other preparations for the expedition, Shackleton set out on the final leg of his journey to Antarctica on January 19th, 1915.

Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) was a British polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, and one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.

Shackleton and his Anglo-Irish family moved to Sydenham in suburban south London when he was ten. Also, Shackleton was a member of the English aristocracy. He was commissioned into the Royal Navy where he developed a close relationship with the leader of the Royal Geographical Society whose support allowed him to embark on his first expedition.

In 1901, he sailed with Robert Falcon Scott on the first of Scott’s two expeditions to Antarctica. On this trip, Shackleton suffered from scurvy and was sent home on medical grounds after being confined to a hospital bed for several months.

On the second expedition from 1910 to 1913 he set a new southern record by marching to latitude 88°S and went on to lead an assault on what is now known as Vahsel Bay but his party was forced to turn back when its supporting ship, which had almost reached its destination, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed before it could be freed.
